The other schools: Since 1999, the French language has been an optional subject for the Jordanian high school certificate. It can be considered as the third spoken language in Jordan, after Arabic and English. Since 1994, the primary and secondary schools pupils of 24 education institutions can learn French for three hours per week.
At the political level, the official meeting between the French head of state and late King Hussein increased the interest in learning French in Jordan and the result of this is the development of teaching French in Jordanian schools.
During the year 2001/2002, the number of pupils learning French increased. 2845 children learn French in primary schools and 6576 in secondary schools.
From 2004 and on, the French language will be a compulsory subject for all pupils of computer literacy and hotel courses wishing to pass their high school certificate.
Jordanian authorities initiated the integration into their staff of three French language assistants, appointed in the Amman area, in the South and in the North, in order to supervise the efficiency and rigorousness of the practice of 35 local teachers.
Moreover, the participation of pupils and their teachers in some activities and events such as the reading festival “lire en fête” or the Francophone days, for example, motivates the pupils to learn French.
The multimedia library,
located at AYSHA School, received a collection of books and educational
material from Hachette foundation in 2001. This foundation represents
the center of the French scholar culture, with special access
